Europa (A Science Fiction Rock Comedy about an Insurance Agent in Space and the wayward characters on a small mining outpost), stars Paulie Z (lead singer of Z02), Collette McClafferty (lead singer from Edible Red), Richard Lloyd (from the legendary band Television), Tatiana Moroz, Jason Sadie, Andre Softeland, Erica Ether, Georgia Haege, Linnea Larsdotter and Christina Saragaglia. Rob Susman handled musical direction while Mike Farr directed.

I wrote Europa while on pain medication back in 2005 after shoulder surgery. Richard Darrigo directed the original production which was performed at the Collective Unconscious when the theater was still on Church Street in Tribeca. We had an original score written by David Penn (who now heads up the music industry newsletter that is the standard for composers “Hit Songs Deconstructed.”) and projections by Donald O’Finn. You can still see some of the clips from that production which starred Christopher Robert Smith and Makenzie Caine on my myspace page brianmclanemusic

It’s interesting because we committed ourselves to such an impossible production schedule and ultimately pulled off the performances from casting to cast party in less than three months. That is quite remarkable. We were grabbing props and putting together costumes and lighting schemes down to the day of the first performance. Incredible.

We put fannies in all the seats for each of the four shows and had several VIPs from the theater and rock world show up.

Theater is such a painful process but one that is ultimately so rewarding as I hope you’ll agree when you watch this production. There will be a next generation cast and crew with a modern ship (full band) as opposed to just piano. I liken it to the difference between Star Trek TOS (the Original Series) and Star Trek The Next Generation. I personally find watching TNG more enjoyable but I only own an autographed copy of Star Trek The Original Series.

While Jean Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart), Commander Riker (Jonathan Frakes), Commander Data (Brent Spiner), Wil Wheaton (Wesley Crusher), and the rest are awesome, few can argue that William Shatner as Captain Kirk, and Leonard Nimoy as Spock are still the gold standard. Such may always be the case with Europa.
