VILLAGE LIGHT OPERA GROUP KEEPING THE GENRE ALIVE AND WELL FOR 75 YEARS

June 11th, 2012 · No Comments · theater

For over 75 years Village Light Opera Group (VLOG) has been performing light operas, operettas and musicals. Recently though, the mission of Village Light Opera Group has expanded to include a broader range of performance genres. You will recognize some of the names such as Gilbert & Sullivan, and Rodgers and Hammerstein.

Village Light Opera however has also expanded into original works such as Scrooge & Gilbert & Sullivan, with a book and lyrics by one of the group’s members. Village Light Opera uses musicians from Local 802 and is in fact the only community theater organization within NYC with a union orchestra. Village Light Opera Group is known for providing opportunities to non-Equity actors and a platform for up-and-coming designers, producers and directors to show their talents on the big stage. This is not some amateur group but professionalism at the highest level.

The membership is comprised of volunteers who do most of the heavy lifting including all off-stage activity, including production planning, fundraising and training.

You can catch one of Village Light Opera Group’s new productions at the NY Fringe Festival.

Here is a clip of Village Light Opera Group from YouTube that is from a performance of Scrooge in 2007. The video isn’t that great but check out the ensemble and the costumes. You can catch Village Light Opera Group performing The Beggar’s Opera in Park Slope starting Thursday night June 21st at 274 Garfield Place (Congregation Beth Elohim).

Another DO NOT MISS. For more information on Village Light Opera Group check out their website at http://www.vlog.org.
