In New York City, a Personal Localized Alert Network (or “PLAN”) has been launched in conjunction with the FCC and the New York City Mayor’s Office. It is the beginning of FEMA’s deployment of an Integrated Public Alert Warning System.

Bottom line:

The government is now able to reach you on your cell phone via a governmental app that is now on your cell phone. And as with many erosions of our civil liberties, the initials premises by which our rights are slowly eroded are good ones. But again, you now have a government app on your cell phone.

I don’t know – do YOU trust the government?

I will say this. For those who have nothing to hide, it should be no bother. And it can’t hurt to have a warning such as there’s a tornado coming, a flash flood alert etc., but I would like to have been asked first whether or not I consented to such an intrusion. Do I need Big Brother to tell me whenever there’s a storm heading your way, or more often than not possibly heading my way? Could this be used as a way for a politician to get his voice onto every cellphone?

You can read the official press release here.

There’s a friendlier article on NOAA’s website (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) here.

This governmental app will keep me informed I guess, and more? What do you think? Click on this interesting video and you’ll hear what I sort of am in agreement with. This guy sums it up.
