Is a Chinese Doomsday supercomputer the horror? Or is it the fact that America keeps giving away its lead, to China?

A supercomputer is a computer that, to put it simply, processes more information than one can even conceive of being possible. In the heat of the cold war (no pun intended), there were several movies about artificially intelligent supercomputers that eventually become self aware and implement an agenda of their own. Later we would see the Terminator series and on TV Star Trek’s “The Borg.”

Conspiracy theorists and biblical scholars have attributed one supercomputer in particular as being “The Beast” a figure in the Book of Revelations, the last book of the New Testament.

A three-story computer in Brussels, Belgium called “The Beast,” is described as being the brain-child of elites in the New World Order (or the Common Market). It is said to be “self programming” (whatever that means), and is intended to track the daily buying and selling activities of every person on earth. Although to some an urban legend, it’s not too ridiculous in the light of recent “revelations” that have landed Google and Facebook in a lot of hot water regarding their users privacy.

While 5 of the top 10 supercomputers reside in the U.S. and others in the common market, conspiracy theorists and moviegoers will have to look at supercomputers like Colossus and Hal – the truth is that as of October 2010, the Tianhe-I super computer is the fastest in the world; it is located in China.

According to an article in P.C. World which you can find here , China has now overtaken the U.S. in P.C. supercomputing performance. First all the manufacturing, then all the wealth, now the best computer performance are all located in Asia.

What’s next? Natural Resources?

Here’s a clip from Colossus.
