DATING SITES, DATING TOOLS, DATING TECH, HAS IT COME DOWN TO THIS FOR YOU?

I actually don’t like using this subhead but it definitely fits here –

WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON?

Maybe a better byline would be – how desperate have people gotten?

A recent article I saw in the New York Times talked about a new service/website called Cheekd.com.

It’s sort of like sticking a Jesus Loves You pamphlet under rows of cars’ window-wipers and a calling car. Users receive calling cards to dole out to alluring strangers (keywords – dole out and strangers) they encounter in their everyday lives (or stalk), which then enables the recipients of the cards to use the identification code.

Yeah – this sounds really safe. How many teen girls never made it home from a west side or village bar or nightclub? Now psychos can “drop” a card off when someone’s “conveniently” not looking.

There’s now an iPhone App (don’t get me started) called SKOUT which does pretty much the same thing just with GPS. I guess Craigslist takes too long now.

HOW MANY BAD ROMANCES WILL SKOUT LEAD TO?

HOW MANY BAD ROMANCES WILL SKOUT LEAD TO?

According to the site http://www.onlinepersonalswatch.com (uhhhh, okay….), here are some facts about one of the best dating sites.

– 56m first emails sent per year (just what we need more email)
– 132m winks sent per year (useless)
– 12 couples got married or engaged today thanks to Match.com (can we see some photos?)
– users go on 6m dates each year (people using these sites will try anything – been there done that too)
– 1 in 1369 dates leads to marriage on Match.com (Guys – get out your wallets)
– Match.com makes $1m dollars a day from subscription revenues (ahhhh)

eHarmony also has public stats

– 118 couples a day get married or engaged. (I have NEVER met in NYC a single person who’s ever met anyone that’s had a long term relationship with someone they met online much less got married – so where’s all this happening?
– 12-15K new users every day (wonder how many get lured in with a free trial)
– full audience turnover every 6.5 months (this is what keeps the machine turning until people get real I guess)

Look, sorry to be a cynic but maybe it’s me or Investigation Discovery and shows like the Shift or Wicked Attraction. So many bad things can happen with kids you meet at school or people from work much less online.

Now we’re taking the random stranger and glorifying them, and using technology to do it?

WTF is going on? Don’t people have any common sense anymore?
