12,000 TWEETS A MINUTE – HOW DO YOU FIND OUT WHO’S LOCAL?

September 15th, 2011 · No Comments · Technology

As advertising, marketing and attention continues to desert the broadcast and print universe for that of the 1’s and 0’s of the web, brands and advertisers need to get more competitive and do more in less time, for less money. Not easy. Which is why the owner of, let’s say, a boutique fashion line may want to purchase a one stop solution to handle everything from banner ads, to mobile content, to profile site syndication and video streaming. Wow, that’s a mouthful just to say. Can you imagine adding 2 to 3 hours a night to do it effectively.

You may have been hearing the term “Hyper-Local” lately. It’s the new buzz word just like “sea-change” was a few years back. (That’s the last big one that I can think of anyway.

So I’m looking at one of my twitter accounts and while I’ve cleaned up most of the others, this one still has many more people that I’m following than I even remember following (that’s another subject). Twitter used to have a bulk unsubscribe but they cut that out for reasons I still don’t fully understand or agree with.

WELL THIS IS YOUR SUPER DUPER FANTASTIC LUCKY DAY!

I was searching for a way to narrow this down and start making use of my twitter and seeing what people were actually tweeting about more often other than just when I logged in to tweet. It’s great for networking, but also for getting real-time information from the followers who are near you and about things like jobs, news, politics, weather, food, and more.

Some more unscrupulous types are using it for innocent mischief such as Flash Mobs (like you see on the AT&T commercial) but also for criminal purposes as we recently saw in London. Yet someone tweeting from London that you don’t “really” follow is just going to clog up bandwidth and diminish your battery power. While they may point you to some interesting web content or opinion, they can’t help you find a good place to eat in Park Slope or if some major recording artist is playing unannounced at the Bowery Ballroom.

What to do.

Well first you have to realize that it’s great to have a lot of twitter followers, but not necessarily great to be following more people than follow you. Download the check all extension on Chrome (which is the only browser you should be using). Next go to Manageflitter.com and enjoy. You can only unfollow 1000 users a day unless you upgrade but it seems that this is the only 3rd Party Approved Application for Bulk Unfollowing.

Thank Goodness someone at Twitter had the good sense to allow this valuable mechanism again.

As you go down the chain of “following” you can mouse over people you follow and get specific stats and geographical data about the user and decide whether or not you want to continue following them. Then build relationships with like minded people who are close to your geographical location.

If you are trying to build a brand and have ads on social networks, this is extremely necessary.

BULK UNFOLLOW IS BACK!

FYI The top ten Tweeters are Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber, Barack Obama, Katy Perry, Kim Kardashian, Britney Spears, Shakira, taylorswift, ashton kutcher, and Ellen DeGeneres.
