GROWTH OF SOCCER IN THE USA

January 16th, 2011 · No Comments · sports

I’ve been watching UEFA on Fox Sports and I can’t get enough. Even with Football, Baseball Hot Stove and the Resurgent New York Knicks (wait did I just say that?), I have to find enough time to watch UEFA.

My team…. well I’ve always liked Bayern Munich because of my childhood attachments but since doing an event with Manchester United and Sir Alex Ferguson back in July 2010, I’m a fan. Really great guys and they were all too obliging to sign my son’s Man U Jersey. I can say that without being labeled as jumping on the band wagon.

It’s been common knowledge that up until now soccer has been less popular in the United States than most other parts of the world. A recent check of MLS attendance shows that Major League Soccer is enjoying higher per game attendance than basketball and ice hockey. What??? Whoah!!!!

According to Wikipedia, “Although MLS is also much younger than other sports’ first divisions (it only has 16 teams), it is the 12th most-attended premier division in the entire world.” In 2006a match at the Los Angeles Coliseum on a Sunday drew over 90,000 spectators, in August! Barcelona was also playing Mexico’s Guadalajara but still….On August 1, 2009, a friendly match between the Los Angeles Galaxy and Barcelona at the Rose Bowl, drew a crowd of 93,137 fans.

Just keep your eyes on soccer. Fox Sports really scored a coup with this one.

There are two videos in this post. The first is a clip from our day with the Manchester United players courtesy SplashVideo.tv. And the second is an
