TOO MUCH e-comm SHOPPING NOT A GOOD DEAL

April 17th, 2012 · No Comments · Social Commentary

I looked up from my phone where my attention was on my Daily News App to see that the entire car was branded with ads for a website called wag.com. if it has a tail, and you want to shop for it wag.com will ship it to your door. A few months back another outfit launched soap.com which did the same for household products.

With evermore websites coming online with the shop at home consumer as their Target Market, it makes one think if we have reached a saturation point on this idea too.

Like reality television and apps, we have far too many that we can even stand anymore. Clearly the folks behind wag.com have convinced certain people flush with expendable capital that Amazon or other e-commerce sites can’t handle any more and that there’s room for yet one more on the e-comm party bus. While I personally cannot bring myself to add yet another bookmark to my browser (certainly without deleting something else), the owners of wag.com may be right.

A recent experience with Amazon.com was so bad that I most likely will not use them again. On a recent trip to Florida my mom ordered gifts for the kids. Sofi got some Melissa and Doug (talk about a brand story), puzzles and Nodari asked for a Christiano Renaldo Real Madrid Long Sleeve Home Jersey. Got to hand it to him he knows what he wants.

In short the seller didn’t ship the jersey for three days after payment and was held up in the US Mail for, get this, 2 weeks. My mom paid for standard 3-5 day shipping. Sorry that’s not good enough to keep me as a customer.

I can see saving on gas and time but at the expense of not being able to touch, feel and handle the merchandise, compounded by not receiving it until weeks later I say that’s not a good deal.

Not only is there wag.com but there is also http://wwww.swagofthemonth.com. Swag of the Month sends you the hottest trends in men’s shirts that match your personal style every month for $9. Sounds great. I mean I want to wear some letters on a cheap tee to help advertise a brand that cares nothing about me. Don’t you?

The one saving grace is that eventually we have to run out of letters and words…. right? Right?
