THE TECHNOLOGY OF TERROR, THE SCIENCE GETTING INVOLVED

May 2nd, 2010 · No Comments · Social Commentary

… and all the king’s horses and all the king’s men, couldn’t put Humpty together again…

Not too long ago I blogged about London’s cameras and how crime was actually up in those districts with CCTV. And now this. If it wasn’t for one alert citizen – how many would have died. About a year ago I was on my way to a meeting and a creepy guy who looked like President Ahmadinejad of Iran’s twin, got on the train, and was doing his best not to look at anyone. He got on in an area where to be frank, I’ve never seen an Arabic man get on the train. There was just something about him that set off a red flag – wearing a suit and carrying a gym bag that had some items in it that were ill fitted to the duffle.

I don’t know it just seemed weird. And he kept looking at his watch every minute or so. Again – you know how when you’re on the train you can’t help looking at someone else, and your eyes meet. Not so with this dude. I had to get off in downtown Brooklyn and couldn’t missing this sales meeting so I went to the conductor, (I had to run in my boots) before the train pulled out of the station and told him after he closed the doors. Of course I couldn’t find a cop when I needed one.

“Look, there’s a guy on the train, with a bag…. and proceeded to tell him my suspicions. The cops can stop you on the train and do a bag search no harm done. And if you’re not carrying anything illegal, you have nothing to worry about. In Arizona – you can be Latino and walking down the street and get stopped now.

And even in this past week we had a story about a homeless man coming to the rescue of a girl who was being assaulted on the street and the attacker plunged a knife into hero Hugo Alfredo Tale-Yax – killing him. Video cameras taped no less than 16 people walk by him as he bled to death on the street.

Why? Because they didn’t want to get involved. Street vendor Duane Jackson – a Vietnam Vet, didn’t waste time checking out something that raised a red flag, and alerted the nearest cop.

What good is all the bomb sniffing, airport delaying, sensor ring around the city technology worth if a lone wolf – a true believer, fanatic, maniac, whatever you want to call them, can do what happened a few years back in London with the nightclub bombings there.

They caught those guys (didn’t they?), and now the best police force in the world, is being asked to do the same. But thanks to Planet Hollywood, there’s no clear video of the perp because, um… well, their security cameras haven’t worked for a year? And it’s unfair to blame them, though typical, but it begs the question…. it’s not why, how or who… it’s just a question of when.

So for my Sunday night Music Video Blast From The Past – here’s Gary Numan – IN CARS.

BLAST FROM THE PAST, CLICK FOR IN CARS

The point is – in the words of hero Duane Jackson… See Something, Say Something!
