GLAD to be home. Had a productive time at NAB in Las Vegas but boy – am I glad I don’t have to do that for a living. Sitting around in airports, dealing with the WIFI, ugh.

That said here are a 5 tips for making the most of being at a trade show IF you have to. Pretty much the only reason I would ever go is if I’m getting in free (usually as press), or speaking. That said – here are some useful pointers.

What makes trade show time successful? For starters, take the following tested tips:

Tip 1: Spend Serious Time Planning
Tip 2: Make sure you have a good business card and that you give it out to people who ask for yours first.
Tip 3: Get in and Get out. You don’t have to be there for more than 3 days.
Tip 4: Network, but do it Right – More than half the people want to sell you something so don’t waste time at booths which you know are not going to be useful. Make the most of networking, but don’t spread yourself too thin.
“People try to gather as many business cards as they can,” and that’s good only if you can identify in your head the conversations you had with those people. Always follow up with a personal anecdote in an email a few days later.
Tip 5: Can’t Afford It? Don’t Go. If you are going to watch every penny, wait until next year. Avoid Las Vegas at all costs if you can.

No matter what – you definitely want to spend more time at your business than say George Clooney does in up in the air. And always bring your “Airborne.”
