RECRUITERS – CAREER OPPORTUNITIES – IT’S WHO YOU KNOW DON’T YOU GET IT?

July 30th, 2010 · No Comments · Social Commentary

You get a call from some number you’ve never seen or it’s blocked….

“Hi this is John Smith and I’m calling from Tech Whatever, and I saw your resume online and wanted to know if…..”

YADA…. YADA…. YADA….

It’s gotten to the point where I shouldn’t event spend too much time giving them any background. Certainly – DON’T WASTE YOUR CELL MINUTES. The ads on Craigslist and Monster are half scams (pick up a package and we’ll pay you is the latest), and nine tenths of the rest are companies that just want you to come in or give them data.

Such is the career opportunity outlook under Obama’s watch. Reagan once said, (Are) Do You think you are better off than you were four years ago? Then Dirty Harry said – Well, Do you punk?

So after a 20 minute call (I always start off having learned to give short concise answers but then get excited), the guy asks for a hard copy of my resume and any other supporting links, whatever. Shortly after the call (I guess to make sure that they get your resume), I receive one of these.

“It was a pleasure speaking with you today, and I think I may have already found you a great opportunity! When you recieve this email please forward me over a copy of your most recent resume, and any samples you think I should have. In the meantime I am going to speak with my manager and try and get your name in the hat for one of the positions we are working on. Once a get a response with your materials I can give you all the details of the position. I look forward to speaking with you soon!”

Now – that’s a cut and paste (and a good one), if I ever saw it. General enough to use for all purposes but it took this guy maybe 30 seconds to get it out to me and move on to his next target.

I’m trying to think what’s the angle here? Because it happens all the time. It’s gotten to the point where I haven’t gotten a job through a recruiter since 2000 (Adecco). Are they mining data, collecting resumes, what’s the scam?

Craigslist – I have found to be almost a complete waste of time. It’s really gotten so that any money that’s gone in my pocket has come through friends or personal connections. Then there’s the one or two instances that I’ll be forwarded a link in which you have to go to say NBC Universal or Nintendo’s site and fill out a profile.

Wonder how many of those I have out there?
