REALITY CHECK – NOW IT’S A BAN ON BIG SUGARY DRINKS

Although I’m not a smoker, I hated the idea that our Mayor was taking it upon himself to appoint himself New York’s Surgeon General. Who does he think he is banning smoking in bars, then banning smoking in parks, now you can’t smoke on the street….

I can’t believe I’m saying this but come on Cigarette Companies – SHOW SOME SPINE!

Now the mayor wants to ban those big sugary drinks. Again, by itself it’s not a bad idea. Kids are getting fatter and fatter and these soft drink companies are reaping the benefits.

The argument can be made that while adults can make decisions for themselves, the kids can’t and placing these vending machines with sugary drinks appeals to impulse buying. It’s not just bad that the kids are wasting their money on a soda and chips when they can get maybe a handball or a comic book, but they’re less healthy for it.

Now however the fight to keep, I guess, all New Yorkers healthy by prohibiting the sale of those big sugary drinks (I think anything over 32 ounces). It’s been suggested that these drinks be taxed or, get this – to make them a controlled substance.

I can see it now. The undercover cops jump out of an unmarked car and cuff little Billy as he buys a Supersized Frosty.

I wonder if there will be an element of racial profiling.
