OUTSOURCING TO INDIA – WILL I FALL FOR IT… AGAIN?

May 3rd, 2010 · No Comments · Social Commentary

So we’ve got a proposal in front of a non-profit who wants an iPhone app. I know, I know, don’t get me started. But I’ve found that people don’t understand the ubiquity of WAP and as with all other technological trends “THINK SOCIAL MEDIA”, tend to fall for the sexy buzz words and “things they think they are comfortable with.”

But iPhone Apps are going to cost in the neighborhood of a month of Dev time (that’s if you can find someone who knows Objective C – the native iPhone programming language) and likewise for graphics. So about 200 hours and then QA.

After doing a bit of research I found a site that praises off-shore development. But I’ve been burned by developers in the Ukraine, and two in India so that makes three in all. It always starts off well, but then turns into a nightmare. Like the old adage goes, “You get what you pay for,” or “There’s a sucker born every minute.”

I can’t even imagine the scenario that would have me staying up on Skype all night until a foreign development shop opened it’s doors at 10 am (do the math – it was always between 1 am at the earliest and 3 am normally). I still have a sleep disorder from all those restless nights. So – to answer my own question, the answer is I’d rather turn the project down than work with India again. Even today, when I got a call from “John Davis” at “Whateverthehell Infotech” I almost yacked.

But is that the end of outsourcing?

Perhaps not. Someone at the Onion had a great idea for Individuals outsourcing their own jobs. Think about it. If I make 60K a year and pay 12K a year to have someone do my job for me? Hmmmm…. now you may have something.

Watch this report.

Can I fall for Outsourcing, Again?

And if you know of a good project management team in India – please let me know. On second thought… keep it to yourself.
