If someone had told me that I’d wind up as Brian McLane, Life Insurance Agent, I wouldn’t have believed them. Anyone who reads this blog might perhaps also find it surprising as well. It was always a subject I ignored for a variety of reasons, too far in the future, who’s got the money for that, I wouldn’t trust these big companies – what if they go bankrupt, and so on.

I worked hard in the media and technology realm for years. In fact, I really missed working at Brown Raysman (search previous posts) where I made a good salary, was done at 5:30 and had plenty of time to play music, go away whatever. Production and technology was a fascinating albeit never ending journey that more times than not led to dead ends.

So when after Sofia was born, I started to think – gee, I’m now 47, I haven’t really saved a lot. I have a patent and a trademark which I spent a lot of time and money on but whether or not they are ultimately monetized remains to be seen. I own artwork and rare coins, have a large autograph collection and a top notch baseball card collection but I always spent and enjoyed my money. Not really in debt, just spent it.

One of the things I spent a lot of time and money on was my art and music. Rehearsals, recordings, plays, movies, editing equipment. And so while some of the kids I grew up with have portfolios, I can point to that volume of work that my kids will have forever to remember me by.

But then I finally grew up and decided it was time. And so when my life insurance policy was recently issued and I picked it up yesterday, I had a sense of accomplishment, satisfaction and relief. And when I put my daughter to sleep later that night, I knew that no matter what, one day, she would be taken care of because – I am 46 years older than her. And now it was going to be alright.
