Happy Working at TARGET. Economies of Scale and Contentment.

“I could work at Target” I thought as I stared down the empty aisles looking at the rows of televisions synchronously playing the same channel. With nobody around and it being after 8 o’clock, the solitude was delicious.

Granted perhaps the SuperTarget in Boynton Beach is a little different. The seniors go to bed early and they have to be up from their nap at 4:30 in order to be in time for the early bird an hour later. If you start at noon or 1, and work until 9 means a short work day.

Let me rephrase that, a less stressful work type of day.

Since I’ve been down in Florida all of two nights, my mind has emptied, I haven’t raised my voice once, my shoulders have sunk and the grin on my face has returned.

I want to stay that way. Question is how and, I’m not saying it would be easy, but I may have found a way. What do these people know that I don’t?

I could stock the shelves, make small talk with people as they checked out, help people find stuff, take a break, have lunch…. I’d also have plenty of time to ponder the lack of funds in my bank account. But you go to the library instead of Netflix, get basic cable for the reception and that’s it, make your lunch instead of eat out, go to the YMCA instead of New York Health and Racquet, there’s no doubt there would be many sacrifices.

And the trade off is getting rid of a lot of anguish, worry and frustration. No doubt there are many people who could do this job high. But why would you want to? Soak up the congeniality. Relish the chance to be helpful. Do some people watching and practice up on your social skills!

So much time is spent obsessing about money, chores, obligations and yet does it ever really make a difference when it comes to the quality of life one leads. The more you make the more you spend.

Now I am of course very happy working as a Life Insurance Agent, and if I am fortunate, I’ll be able to avoid working in my retirement years. But this might not be the worst situation to find oneself in. I actually spoke with a few seniors who worked at this particular Target in Boynton Beach (Off Hagen Ranch Road), and they enjoyed the social interaction and having a sense of purpose.

That said, here’s a link to a post on indeed.com which is seemingly skewed to an opinion other than the one I have expressed above. Again, I never really notice the other big retail chains in the same way as in this store. Clean, calm, smiles. Maybe this place has good management?

All the other people at this Target do it somehow. Maybe they know something the rest of us don’t? That big bank of televisions playing the latest videos and movies that you never have time to watch or go see? Well, here’s Ciara with “WORK” featuring Missy Elliott. After you watch this video you won’t be thinking about working or loafing.
