Fish On A Line - A Poem By Brian McLane

Did you ever stop to think that you are happy? No? Did you ever turn into someone you never thought you would be? What about into someone you didn’t want to be. And ultimately, the person you had to be.

Hunger and curiosity makes for tempting bait.

A progression of events triggered by decision, consequence and circumstance, intertwined and processed into a continually reevolving form like so much dough that can turn out to be anything.

Like a fish on a line it can be prepared in a variety of ways.

The final dish has not yet been served, the last chapter not written, or perhaps just not read. As the years go on and life offers its joys and heartaches brought on by family, friends and work,… the world at large. The clay from which our lives is made hardens. There is less give, the inevitable outcome like a fish on a line with excruciatingly decreasing wiggle room, on its way towards its destiny.

And years go by, too many years. But as necessity dictates it’s time to swim back upstream, into familiar yet unpleasant waters. There is empathy and compassion for others whom you do not know but recognize.

Keep moving, keep swimming.

I will not allow myself to be swallowed whole by the maw of providence. I have been set free by a merciful fisher of men.
