THE MUSIC INDUSTRY IN CRISIS

June 29th, 2011 · No Comments · music

Chris Purifoy, Co-founder of the Restoring Music Foundation, has embarked upon crowdsourced research document titled, “Defining the Music Industry Crisis“. Since the start of the project in 2007, the issues have been discussed all across Linkedin in numerous professional music industry circles (most notably within the well respected Music and Entertainment Professionals group). In the end, after thousands of comments and 6 subsequent editions, this article represents the 7th and Semi-Final edition.

Some of the factors include (not surprisingly), Internet Radio, Media Sharing and Piracy. You can read about the study and some of its conclusions here

I’m not sure what the link is to dottedmusic.com, another music industry blog that I follow but there’s lot’s of great insight from the trenches, not the media. The creators of DottedMusic.com are 15% into the development of a more robust website so for now, it’s set up as a Web 2.0 blog. That said, it’s still chock full of industry information, tools and resources. One of the things that I like about it is that it is NOT American-Centric rather seems to have the bulk of it’s contributions coming from Russia and the Eastern Bloc.

The site is run by an interesting fellow named Andrew Apanov who is accessible and you can check out his site but clicking on his picture below.

The music industry as a whole keeps chugging along but clearly seems to be relying on what used to work and continuing to make it up as it goes along. It has forgotten who IT is, or was. The music industry indeed has a personality crisis. Speaking of which, here’s the Sunday Night special with the New York Dolls – Personality Crisis.
