MONDO BOFFO AT CBGB – That’s right kids, your dad used to ROCK.

Oh how I wish it were true and that it was happening this Saturday night. Man was it awesome.

I remember one of the first times we played we opened up for Urban Blight on a New Year’s show back in 1980. Jon Vercesi, Josh Trachtman and I were writing some amazing songs and went to Europe. When we came back, the Urban Road Show was in England and we subletted one of their apartments on E. 2nd Street. There is some information about Mondo Boffo here.

Because of those guys we pretty much always played weekends thanks to Carol Costa (who had her own band Costa Rocka) and later Louise Parnassa, now Louise Staley. And it went on and on. I’d go on Monday nights, Sunday afternoons and the scenes kept changing until it became a tourist stop for bands from out of town who had money to bring in (literally) bus loads of kids and leave. And BG at the door always made you feel like you’d just arrived in your own living room. Hand out, apply stamp.

For the better part of the 80’s and maybe into the 90’s, the best of the best, the new, the strange and the innovative continually graced the stage. I remember Tony the soundman, Robin Danar, Josh even manned the soundboard for a long time. And the bands kept coming.

Mondo Boffo never became a household word but we had our successes thanks to Keith Masco and Radical Records. It was quite a lot of fun hanging at the Radical pad on East 9th then hitting the China Club and be at the same table, hanging out with the likes of Julian Lennon or Simple Minds.

And though the Ritz has faded into memory (although Chris Williamson has an incredible personal archive of his Rock Hotel Concerts which he will one day release), and The China Club is not the same as it was when it was in the Beacon Theater building, only CBGB can bring back the memories of how one was, or what they were about just like a smell on a spring day takes you back to your youth.

Here’s a clip from Mondo Boffo from when we were on MTV. With Scorpio from Grand Master Flash, I Wanna Be A Marine.
