Will Ferrell is helping me with my Mid-Life Crisis

September 1st, 2011 · No Comments · humor

Getting on the F train after a night dribking has its benefits. One gets the chance to reflect, and remember. Flipping through my iPod I settled on I’ll Stop The World And Melt With You. Memories of the early 80’s flooded my mind. Going to The Ritz on “Depression Mondays” for 2 bucks and seeing bands like The Suburbs from Minneapolis, Eastern Bloc and The Pedantiks seem like they were a few months ago. In fact it’s been almost 30 years since I’d leave The Ritz or CBGB at 2 in the morning and get up to work the Dinner shift at The Waterclub.

Same planet, different life.

Somehow the band Modern English doesn’t go with the view I have of my suit pants, black socks and shoes, in between which is my flight carry on loaded with insurance applications and forms.

But I have a hot 31 year old wife, absolutely LOVE my kids, and after years am at a desk in an office again. Just came back from a two week summer vacation… so….. what’s wrong?

How or why do I keep having these fits of nostalgia. And apparently I’m not alone. Many people tell me they’re depressed. I’m not depressed – just…. nostalgic. Shouldn’t I be happy that I’ve arrived. The odds aren’t great considering the route I’ve taken. Maybe content is more appropriate.

There’s no getting around the fact that the years go by. One day you’re 47 (soon to be 48), and girls in their 20’s regard you as a curiosity while to guys that age you are invisible. And then more music from 20 years and older comes on. Music that was popular when these “Intercontinental Trendies” were sucking on their mothers’ tits. Somehow I have to become comfortable with growing older. It’s the classic mid-life crisis.

But how to stay relevant and involved approaching 50, and not just to your friends? Well, I think Will Ferrell may have provided some significant insight into this question. Click the link to see.
