Going to The Mall as a parent is a trip.

I remember going to the Queens Mall on Queens Blvd. in Rego Park with my parents when I was a kid. We used to go to Alexander’s Department Store and then one day we heard there was this new thing called the Mall.

When it came to the shopping it was more like a chore. I was embarrassed by the clothes I got because my parents couldn’t afford to get me the expensive brands other kids got. Of course I didn’t realize how lucky I was to have any nice clothes.

In those days the whole concept of brands marketing to kids was in its infancy. BonJour jeans was a pioneer and then Guess came along sometime later. But I remember my mom sending me over and over into the fitting rooms and wanting for the clothes part to be over. How different it is with my son.

Nodari is so style conscious and loves picking out clothes. I kept an eye on price but could hear my mom saying it’s a once a year thing – back to school. It’s so important for kids to feel comfortable and confident at school. There are many more international kids so brands like Tommy Hilfiger and Ecko have created lines to appeal to their national sensibilities such as creating soccer jerseys with the names Argentina, Italy, Spain or Brazil on them.

My job was to keep an eye on Sofia who was a little terror and getting herself into all kinds of mischief. I also loved the gifts, free samples and making suggestions.

What a trip though to be Dad at the Kings Plaza Mall.
