Hexbug Nano at TimeToPlayMag.com's 2010 Holiday Showcase

I was at the TimeToPlayMag.com 2010 Holiday Showcase and of all the my son received, his favorite just might be the smallest.

It was the Hexbug Nano. How cool is it? We even watched a show on-demand on the Science Channel with Dr. Michio Kaku about how we’re going to use nanobots to colonize space.

He’s hooked.

I was blown away by the artificial intelligence of these little critters as they crawled around a expandable track. According to the company’s fact sheet you may be interested to know:

The HEXBUG Nano is a tiny, collectible, micro robotic creature that uses the physics of vibration to propel forward and explore its environment. Powered by a tiny motor, and 12 fixed, angular legs, the industrious critter traverses the ground beneath it and quickly navigates through the most complex mazes. Possessing an uncanny sense of balance, it can even flip to its feet and zoom forward when turned on its back! When coming into contact with an object in its path, the energetic insect will switch directions and scurry away on a new path due to its persistent random behavior.

Wasn’t there an X Files episode about this?

In addition to the Hexbug Nano is the Hexbug Crab! The HEXBUG Crab is a micro sized robotic creature that uses its autonomous light and sound sensors to hide in the dark and run from loud noises. You can control where each HEXBUG Crab scurries and can make it change direction with the clap of your hands.

The thing that I love about them is that they’re cutting edge, get the kids thinking in the right direction and the price isn’t too steep.
